13 Snacks for Freeform’s “31 Nights of Halloween”

1. Meringue Bone Cookies

No cookie cutter required here! The only ingredients needed to assemble this Halloween treat are two large eggs, cream of tartar and sugar. First, separate the yolks, and beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar in a small bowl. Then, gradually incorporate the sugar while continuing to beat on high. You’ve reached a stopping point when the meringue becomes relatively moldable and peaks start to form in the mixture.

Take a resealable sandwich bag, and cut a small hole in one of the corners for a makeshift piping tool. Pipe the meringue into a bone shape—create a log shape to your desired length, and add two small circles on opposite ends of the log. Once cooled from baking, we think these cookies are the perfect accompaniment for Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas. All hail the Pumpkin King!

2. Peanut Butter and Oreo Bats

Probably Count Chocula’s favorite treat, these chocolatey bats are actually very easy to make. All you need is a pack of Oreos, a bag of mini Reese’s peanut butter cups and some candy eyeballs.

Separate one of the cookies from the Oreo cream, and crack it into two halves to create a set of bat wings. Use the Oreo cream to attach each wing onto opposite sides of a Reese’s mini peanut butter cup so the rounded edges are turned upward. Attach the candy eyeballs onto your fang-tastic creation, and voilà!

3. Cheese Stick Broomsticks

Take a page out of the Sanderson sisters’ spellbook, and delve into some witchiness with these easy-to-make snacks. To conjure up this treat, cut a string cheese log for each broom, and poke a pretzel stick about halfway into the small block of cheese. Either using your fingers or a butter knife, pull thin sections of the cheese about a third of the way upward toward the pretzel stick to create broom bristles.

4. Eyeball Cupcakes 

For this Halloween dessert, the fun is all in the decorating. Simply follow your favorite cupcake recipe and spread a layer of white frosting as your base. Turn to assorted candy and cake decorating tools for the rest of your dessert. We suggest using a ring-shaped gummy candy to affix each white-frosted cupcake for an iris and adding an M&M or Skittle in the center of the gummies for a pupil. For an especially eerie look, red cake decorating gel is great for creating blood veins. Really, the possibilities are endless!

5. Boo-nana Ghosts

For a pair of ghostly treats, cut a banana in two. Prop the ghosts up planted on their flat end so that the curved ends of the banana are pointed upward. Stick two mini chocolate chips in each banana half for eyes, and attach a regular-sized chocolate chip to add a howling mouth. Repeat as desired. Optional: melt any remaining chocolate chips over the stove to create a delectable dip.

6. Green Slimer Jell-O

Take inspiration from the Ghostbusters franchise’s paranormal mascot, and serve up a green gelatin salad made from unsweetened applesauce, lime Jell-O and 7-Up soda. 

First, boil the applesauce over the stove, over a low flame, and stir in the contents of the lime Jell-O packet until the mixture looks thoroughly green. Move the concoction away from the stove, and let it cool to room temperature. Then, stir in the 7-Up to give the gelatin a fun, ectoplasm-y texture. Pour the mixture into a Jell-O mold, let it chill in your fridge for about 3 hours, and dig in!

7. Freaky Finger Cookies

While it may not be for baking gingersnaps, this cookie recipe can be made in a snap or two, since we’re invoking The Addams Family and the Addams’ severed, phalangeal friend, Thing, here. Whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt. In a separate bowl, beat some butter and sugar until the mixture is fluffy, and gradually incorporate the first bowl’s mixture plus one egg and some pure vanilla extract. Continue to beat the ingredients until a doughy texture is achieved.

To form the cookies, roll the dough to achieve a severed-finger shape, and firmly press a sliced almond on one extreme of each cookie to make fingernails. Feel free to make several horizontal cuts along each cookie for knuckles, and manipulate the sides of the dough to add dimension. We recommend heating up some strawberry jam over a low flame for two minutes to create a bloody-looking dip.

 8. Rice Krispies Haunted House

This treat is fun to build in collaboration with family or friends. Just follow your favorite Rice Krispies treats recipe to create one giant slab. Once cooled, cut six equal squares for the walls, base and roof, one door-sized piece and a smaller rectangular slab for a chimney.

Cut off the top corners off two of the big square pieces to create house-like, pentagonal shapes, and bake all of the cut slabs for so that they are hard and sturdy. Once the pieces are cooled, start to assemble the house by piping frosting on each side of the walls to attach the pieces together. Repeat this process with roof and chimney components. Fully frost one flat side of the door to place at the front of the Rice Krispies house, and decorate as desired! We think chocolate piping, candy corn and mellowcreme pumpkin candy make great decorations!

9. Mike Wazowski Apple Slices

Perfect for kiddos, these healthy snacks can be made by cutting up one green apple in 4–5 equal segments. For each slice, cut a wedge in the middle to create the mouth, and swipe some peanut butter inside. Then, stick on some mini marshmallows for teeth, and use one to create Mike’s eye. We recommend using chocolate piping or a dark cake decorating gel to add a pupil. Finally, use a toothpick to stick the eye on top of your monstrous creation.

10. Willy Wonka’s Chocolate River

Inspired by that famous scene of Augustus Gloop being swallowed by the chocolate river in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, this rich and frothy hot chocolate will leave your insides feeling warm.

Over medium heat, whisk milk, cocoa powder and sugar for about 10 minutes or until the mixture thickens. Gradually add half-and-half creamer and vanilla extract, and whisk for another minute. At that point, pour the drink into a mug, sip it, and let your mind swim in the splendor of chocolatey goodness.

11. Pretzel Pumpkins

All you need to make these chocolatey treats is a pack of small pretzel twists, orange candy melts and green M&Ms. Cut the green M&Ms in half. Then, melt the orange candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave them in 30-second intervals, stirring after every session until all of the pieces are melted. Submerge each pretzel in the melted coating, and place them on a parchment-lined plate. Before the candy coating dries, press a sliced green M&M into the top of the pretzel to create a pumpkin stem. Store the pretzels in your refrigerator for the candy coating to set, and boom!

 12. Hot Dog Mummies

Get wrapped up in the kitchen with this savory treat! You would also need hot dogs, crescent roll dough, American cheese slices and candy eyeballs.

Cut each cheese slice into strips, and unroll the dough to slice into thin bandages. Then, cut each bandage in half vertically for each hot dog. Wrap each dog with a slice of the cut cheese, and coil the bandage around both ingredients while making sure to leave an aperture for a mummy face. Lightly douse the wrapped sausages in cooking spray, and bake! Affix any remaining cheese onto the gap left for the mummy face so that the cheese melts slightly. Attach the two candy eyeballs, and just like that, you’re done.

 13. Spider Sandwich

For the grand finale, we turn to the commonly feared, six-legged house crawler. To make these arachnid creations, first, make a peanut butter sandwich to your liking, and then cut the edges to achieve a circular shape. And the rest is up to you! Pretzel sticks or Red Vines make excellent spider legs, and M&Ms or chocolate chips are great for creating a set of eyes.
